Take Christ out of Christmas…please!

About two years ago I sold my house. The people that bought it seemed nice enough when we met them, and that was important to us since we really liked our neighbors and were hoping not to stick them with crappy neighbors (of course we were the best neighbors ever right??).

Ironically, a little over a year ago, I had the good fortune to move back into my old neighborhood…only 3 doors down from the old house. It’s great being back here. The kids love it and this neighborhood just feels like home to me…that’s why I moved back.

Upon returning, I began hearing stories of the people that live in my old house. They are unfriendly, never come outside to socialize, and were invited but never came to any of the neighborhood gatherings. One time, the guy made a huge banner and put it on a neighbor’s garage asking her to clean up the side of her house. She’d been redoing her backyard, so there was a reason for the mess. But why, she wondered, couldn’t he have just come over and talked to her instead of the passive aggressive approach.

Well, the other dayas I passed my old house while walking to the mailbox, I saw a sticker on the back of the guy’s truck that says “Keep Christ in Christmas”. I laughed out loud when I saw it and thought “isn’t that perfect, the cranky neighbors are Christians”.

And I wasn’t the only one that saw it. Yesterday, one of the neighbors and I were outside and the subject came up. She asked me if I had seen the sticker and then said, “If they are Christians, then why do they seem so mean?”

Now that’s a good question.

As far as I am concerned, it would have been better for this neighbor if they took Christ out of Christmas. Neighbors like this give Christians a bad name. And it’s not just them. In my neighborhood, I can tell you that the neighbors with the worst reputations, by and large, are the Christian church-going ones.

They isolate from everyone, they don’t clean up after their dog, their kids are out of control, they put signs in the common areas pushing their church or republican candidates, and they complain to the association about EVERYTHING and don’t pay their dues on time (I used to be on the HOA).
